When a School Consultation Can Help

If your child is receiving school-based services and you are unsure whether the current plan is meeting their needs, a consultation provides the clinical clarity to move forward. Families typically reach out when:

  • An IEP or 504 plan is not producing results
  • School evaluation findings seem incomplete
  • You are preparing for an IEP meeting
  • A change in services has been proposed
  • You are considering an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE)

What We Review

A detailed clinical review of the documentation and plans that shape your child's school experience.

01
Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

We review the full IEP document, including eligibility determinations, present levels of performance, annual goals, accommodations, related services, and placement decisions.

02
504 Plans

We evaluate whether the accommodations in a 504 plan are appropriate for your child's documented needs and whether additional supports should be considered.

03
School-Administered Evaluations

We examine psychoeducational or educational evaluations completed by school psychologists to determine whether they were comprehensive enough to capture your child's full profile.

04
Prior Independent Evaluations

If your child has had a previous private evaluation, we review the findings and recommendations to assess whether they were fully incorporated into school planning.

05
Service Recommendations and Progress Data

We review progress monitoring data, related service logs, and intervention records to evaluate whether current services are producing meaningful results.

Understanding Independent Educational Evaluations (IEEs)

An Independent Educational Evaluation is a comprehensive assessment conducted by a qualified professional outside the school district. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), parents have the right to request an IEE when they disagree with the school’s evaluation of their child. In many cases, the school district is responsible for funding the IEE.

At Children’s BMC, our neuropsychological evaluations meet the standards required for an IEE. The assessment is the same thorough, evidence-based process we use for all comprehensive evaluations, covering cognitive, academic, emotional, social, and functional domains. The difference is the context: an IEE is specifically intended to provide the school with independent clinical data they may not have obtained through their own testing.

If you believe your child’s school evaluation was incomplete or inaccurate, a school consultation can help you determine whether requesting an IEE is the right next step. We review what was done, identify specific gaps, and help you understand the process for making a formal request to your district.

Frequently Asked Questions

We work with families of school-age children from preschool through high school. Our neuropsychologists have experience navigating school systems at every level, from early intervention through transition planning.

Bring any documentation related to your child’s school services: current IEP or 504 plan, school evaluations, progress reports, report cards, teacher communications, and any prior private evaluations. The more information we have, the more thorough our review can be.

No. A school consultation is a review of existing documentation. We do not conduct new testing during a consultation. If our review determines that your child needs a more comprehensive assessment, we can discuss whether a neuropsychological evaluation or other service is the appropriate next step.

An IEE is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by a qualified provider outside the school district. Parents can request an IEE when they disagree with the school’s evaluation. Under federal law, the district may be required to fund the IEE. Our neuropsychological evaluations meet the standards required for an IEE.

Yes. Our written summary includes specific, actionable recommendations designed to support IEP development, 504 plan creation, and conversations with your child’s school team. We can also discuss strategies for presenting our findings effectively in school meetings.

We can discuss school liaison support on a case-by-case basis. In many situations, a well-prepared written summary and a pre-meeting consultation with you are the most effective way to ensure your child’s needs are represented.

We are not contracted with insurance, but many families still receive reimbursement depending on their plan. In some cases, out-of-network exceptions may allow in-network reimbursement rates. We are happy to provide the information you need to check your coverage and can answer any cost-related questions during your initial call.
