Pediatric Biofeedback Therapy In Puget Sound

Our fellowship-trained specialists use biofeedback to help children manage chronic headaches, stomach pain, and stress-related symptoms. Your child learns to read and calm their own body, so they walk away with practical skills that last well beyond our office.

What Is Pediatric Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a non-invasive, evidence-based treatment that teaches your child to regulate the body’s physical response to pain and stress. Painless sensors measure signals like heart rate, breathing, and muscle tension, then display them on screen in real time, often through video games designed to make the process engaging for kids.

What We Assess

During our sessions, we monitor real-time physiological signals to help your child understand exactly how stress and pain affect their body. We may assess and train:

01
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)

Tracking the beat-to-beat changes in the heart to help your child improve cardiovascular regulation.

02
Breathing Patterns & Rate

Monitoring respiratory depth and pacing to teach efficient, diaphragmatic breathing that naturally triggers a relaxation response.

03
Muscle Tension (EMG)

Measuring electrical activity in muscles - often around the jaw, neck, or shoulders—to help children recognize and release hidden physical stress.

04
Skin Temperature

Tracking subtle changes in blood flow to the extremities, which typically drop during stress, teaching kids to consciously promote circulation and warmth.

05
Skin Conductance (Sweat Gland Activity)

Assessing the emotional arousal of the nervous system by measuring tiny changes in moisture on the fingertips.

Not Sure Which Service Your Child Needs?

Many families aren’t sure which service is the best fit – and that’s completely normal. Our team can discuss your child’s specific situation and recommend the right starting point. We’re here to help you figure it out.

When Biofeedback Can Help?

When your child’s physical symptoms are tied to how their body responds to pain or stress, biofeedback offers a practical, medication-free way to build relief. Our clinicians often recommend it for:

Chronic Headaches & Migraines: Relief for tension headaches and migraines that disrupt school and sleep, including patterns that have not responded to medication alone.

Functional Abdominal Pain: Support for recurring stomach pain without a clear medical cause, especially discomfort that worsens during periods of stress or anxiety.

Stress-Related Symptoms: Help with muscle tension, sleep difficulty, and other physical symptoms that intensify under emotional pressure or high-stress situations.

How Does the Evaluation Process Work?

Our evaluation process is designed to be thorough, supportive, and family-centered. Here’s what to expect from start to finish.

Intake & Consultation

We meet with you and your child to understand the symptoms, review relevant history, and decide whether biofeedback is the right fit. Bella, our office dog, may greet you on the way in.

Sensors & Setup

Small, painless sensors (a fingertip clip, a light chest belt) connect to a computer. Nothing breaks the skin, and your child can move and talk comfortably throughout the session.

Guided Training

Our clinician guides your child through breathing exercises, guided imagery, and muscle relaxation, simple techniques chosen to match their age, symptoms, and comfort level.

Real-Time Feedback

Through video games and visual displays, your child watches their heart rate and breathing respond as they practice. Seeing that connection on screen is what makes biofeedback click for kids.

At-Home Practice

Between sessions, your child practices the same techniques on their own. The goal is for them to recognize early symptoms and calm their body independently at school, at home, and in daily life.

Progress Review

We check in on your child’s progress, review what is working, and adjust the plan as needed. A typical course runs several sessions over a few weeks, tailored to your child’s response.

Frequently Asked Questions

We work with children and teens who are developmentally ready to engage with the techniques and on-screen feedback, typically around age 7 or 8 through young adulthood. Readiness varies by child, and we adjust each session to match where your child is.

Biofeedback trains body functions like heart rate, breathing, and muscle tension, and is well-established for pediatric headaches and abdominal pain. Neurofeedback trains brain waves (EEG) and has a less established evidence base in children. We offer biofeedback because the research supports it for the conditions we treat.

No. Biofeedback requires specialized equipment and in-person guidance, so all sessions take place at our Tacoma office.

Not at all. The sensors are lightweight, painless, and non-invasive. Most children find the experience comfortable and even fun.

Yes. Biofeedback and psychotherapy work well together, especially when physical symptoms and emotional concerns overlap. Our team can coordinate both.

No. Biofeedback can reduce reliance on medication or improve outcomes alongside it, but medication decisions should be made with your child’s pediatrician.

We are not contracted directly with insurance providers, but we provide superbills that many families submit for reimbursement. Reimbursement varies by plan.
